Originally developed by coach Greg Glassman after many years of working with a broad spectrum of athletes, CrossFit uses the natural design of the human body to deliver fitness that is general, functional, and inclusive. After looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, Glassman asked what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage. Capacity culled from the intersection of all sports demands would quite logically lend itself well to all sport. In sum, CrossFit's specialty is not specializing.
CrossFit workouts will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable. At Side Door CrossFit, we believe this is a philosophy to live by. Life can deal us unpredictable cards, and either we can rise to the challenge or fold under the pressure. In CrossFit, there is the expression,“train your weaknesses.” This means that the greatest adaptations happen when you are pushing yourself in new ways, and you are only as fit as your weakest link. CrossFit is, therefore, a way of life that will provide challenges and successes for the rest of your life.
In CrossFit, every workout is different, but is based off of functional movements like squatting, pushing, pulling, jumping, and lifting. These are movements that each person uses in everyday life, but are also what creates elite athletes.
CrossFit defines fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity). CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective.
